Email news bulletin
May 2008
Welcome to latest issue of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation e-bulletin. This email highlights recent news from the Foundation. Our website is regularly updated with information about our work.
Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK. The majority of our funding is through our Main Fund which supports work that focuses on the UK's cultural life, education, the natural environment and enabling people who are disadvantaged to participate more fully in society. If you are interested in applying to the Foundation, you should first read our Guidance for Applicants in full. These are available on our website or by calling 020 7297 4700.
We have recently expanded the guidance on work we will not fund.

Food Strand Launched
We have launched a new funding strand - Food. The strand aims to promote an understanding of the role of food in enhancing quality of life. We are interested in work that influences policy and practice across a range of food-related areas; prioritising the enjoyment and experience of food rather than its production and enabling as many people in the UK as possible to access, prepare and eat nutritious, sustainable food.
The Food strand is now open for applications and will run for three years with a total budget of £3million. For more information and how to apply please visit the Food strand page.
This strand adds to our portfolio of funding strands. Already launched are: Biodiversity, Museum and Heritage Collections and New Approaches to Learning. For more informatioin and how to apply to these please visit our website.

Northern Ireland Pilot
We are carrying out a pilot programme in Northern Ireland to explore the ways in which we can support and develop a strong and resilient voluntary sector; in particular to help encourage new thinking and a new generation of leaders within Northern Ireland.
The pilot is being run in conjunction with The Henry Smith Charity, with a budget of £1million over one year and involving five already invited organisations. In its pilot year this is not open to applications or enquiries.
The pilot will allow us to learn lessons and if successful will form the basis of a longer term strand in the future.

Finance Fund
After a successful nine month pilot exploring alternative ways of funding we have developed a Finance Fund. The fund offers financing to projects or organisations that can demonstrate the need for investment and the capacity to manage the demands of non-grant funding. Arrangements could include loans, guarantees, equity or quasi-equity finance. Up to £15million will be available for funding of this kind.
We only expect to make a small number of investments under this heading and at this stage, the programme will not be open to unsolicited applications.

Annual Report and Accounts 2007
Our Annual Report and Accounts are now published and available on our website. The Report gives a full account of our grant-making with a list of all grants made in 2007 and the changes we have made for 2008. We have focused in particular on some specific case studies that are typical of our approach to grant-making.
