Strategic work: ARTS & HERITAGE
Regional Theatre Initiative
A strategic programme that provides directors with their first opportunity to direct a major production in regional theatres in England and Scotland. From an overall fund of £450,000 three grants were approved in 2002.
Regional Museum Initiative
A strategic programme to help regional museums to strengthen their exhibition programmes. From 2003, grants will be allocated from a total fund of £800,000.

Engaging Hard to Reach Learners a joint initiative between Esmée Fairbairn, NIACE and WEA
A £500,000 project to support the development of new strategies for engaging hard-to-reach adult learners in Barnsley and the Forest of Dean.
Head Support
A programme that aims to develop the leadership skills of middle managers in five schools in Birmingham.
Esmée Fairbairn/Villiers Park Partnership
A research project to identify new professional development opportunities for subject teachers in primary and secondary schools.
Strategic work: ENVIRONMENT
Allotment initiative
An initiative worth £500,000 to develop 'how to' models for regenerating underused allotment sites or finding alternative ways of maintaining them as publicly accessible open spaces. Grants will be allocated in 2003; a single grant was made in 2002 to support the
development of the initiative.
Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens
A grant of £90,000 towards the costs over two years of a Project Officer to develop the capacity of voluntary allotment societies to contribute to the regeneration of UK allotments.
Esmée Fairbairn UK Biodiversity Programme
A £500,000 programme to support the recovery of threatened UK species that are not benefiting from other funding sources. Grants will be allocated in 2003.
Strategic work: RETHINKING CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
A strategic initiative worth £3 million over three years from 2001 which is designed to raise the level of debate about responses to crime, and to identify credible alternatives to prison.

Towards the costs of developing and maintaining a public information criminal justice website, designed to raise the level of debate about crime and criminal justice issues.
CIVITAS - £28,500
Towards the salary and costs of a researcher to research and review evidence outlining the most succcesful way of reducing re-offending by convicted criminals in the US and UK.
Common Purpose UK - £50,000
Towards the salary over two years of a Project Director, to help educate and inform local opinion leaders from the community, public and private sectors about crime and punishment.
DrugScope - £95,600
Towards the salary over two years of a Campaign Worker, and associated costs, to run a campaign to inform public attitudes to women drug offenders in prison.
Inside Out Trust - £70,336
Towards the salary over two years of a part-time Events Organiser to hold a series of events and discussions in prisons in England and Wales, and to engage with the local community.
Justice Research Consortium - £63,750
Towards the costs of a Programme Co-ordinator and support staff to involve opinion formers and policy-makers in restorative justice conferences.
National Children's Bureau - £152,000
Towards the salary over two years of a Co-ordinator, Campaigns Officer and Administrator, to run a public awareness campaign 'Rethinking Child Crime', to help raise the level of debate about policy and practice with young offenders.
